Sorry for the blog silence yesterday. There is always a lot of work to do after a rain. What we really need is a farmhand. Daughter C. has been pushing for this for some time. I wonder if this guy is available?
I’d interview him, but I’m not sure he’d make the final cut. It’s nice for him that he has a Doctorate in Philosophy of Something. I’d be curious what university awarded it but I wouldn’t really care. That he has finished three postdocs means that he has had three full-time temporary jobs that ended when the funding ran out. His six papers? Well, there’s a non-trivial probability that he’s not the sole author on all of them. If his degree is in one of the sciences, he’s probably not the sole author on any of them. That said, six doesn’t strike me as that many. One or two were straight out of his dissertation, and three were probably publications from the three postdocs research. (I am a lowly vegetable farmer and I have six publications.)
Beyond that, if he’s reduced to advertising himself like a homeless person, why are these the qualifications he’s emphasizing? He tried, and failed, academia. It’s happening to a lot of folks these days. I don’t suppose there’s any shame in that. But the real question is…
Besides going to school, what can he do?
Can he operate a chain saw? Does he know how to repair fences? Has he ever framed and hung drywall? Can he paint reasonably well? Split wood? Is he handy with installing light or plumbing fixtures? Is more traditional women’s work his thing? Does he do windows?
We’d be happy to hire him to do these and other things. We’d be happy to not only feed him, but to loan him space to feed himself– to grow his own veggies, or chickens, or bees, or a little cow, or goat– in return for an honest day’s labor. But what can he do?
We have jobs for him. But he seems to think he’s qualified to do these jobs based on having gone to school K-25.
