Good People of the Earth: I have things to do. I cannot become engaged in this flag thing that’s hit Mississippi.

It’s hot and there are a few things that I urgently need to tend to so I cannot possibly spend the next day researching the origin of the flag(s) … or burning of … symbolism of … . (It would be interesting to go back and read about crappy old flag customs in battle, wouldn’t it?)

But I don’t have time to get involved in all of this flag business.

So I emailed the Lt. Governor.

It’s Mississippi. I looked at his bio. He looks like a normal guy. There just aren’t that many people here and sometimes it just makes sense to say “thanks” to an elected official who actually comes close to representing me in public when it counts.

Dear Mr. Reeves,

I write to thank you for your response to the outrage of the day, the flag affair (which I read at Y’all Politics).

While I could quibble with a thing or two, I whole-heartedly agree with your sentiment. If ever there were a states’ rights issue, surely this is it. I especially liked the way you identified the “outsiders.”

One thing I found interesting, but I haven’t heard mentioned, is this. Supposedly, Mississippi has the greatest number of Black elected officials in the U.S. Not per capital but absolutely. More Black elected officials than any other state. And each working day those men and women go to work in buildings that are flying the Mississippi State flag– a symbol. If they or anyone else were offended in 2014-2015, you’d have thought everyone would know by now. But maybe they and their co-workers and supporters of all tone have just been too busy working to accomplish something that they didn’t have time to look up.
