“Blue Wednesday” on First Second Monday

“Blue Wednesday” is the title of the first chapter in a book I got at the library book sale, normally held the first Monday of the month but on account of Labor Day this month held yesterday.

See? That wasn’t so hard.

The book is Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster. First published in 1912, it looks like it’s come to life on stage and in film at least a couple of times.

What a delightful little story! With a bit of substance! I started reading it late this morning and finished early this evening. (Yes. I did remember to feed Tiger.)

TRIGGER WARNING!! This crappy old book is over 100 crappy old years old!!!!!

In those crappy olden times, American Women could not yet vote in Federal Elections!!!!! ‏In those days, not only were there different facilities for ♂s and ♀s, but ♂s and ♀s went to different colleges (though they did read the same literature and study the same histories and languages)!!!!! There is mention of girls sports like basketball and track and field and the shooting sports. In this crappy old book from the crappy olden days, ♂s and ♀s fall in love and♀s of human and other mammalian species are understood to be the bearers of a new generation. (Spoiler: the pigs are fecund.)

SOME OF THESE FEATURES OF THIS CRAPPY OLD BOOK MAY OFFEND SOME.

If you are a-scared that you will be scared of what you might read in this crappy old book, then God have mercy on your soul.

I thought it a delightful read– heavy on the silly story, light on the social commentary of the time. But thoroughly enjoyable. (There’s even passing mention of the Ablative Absolute.)

  1. Umm…

    I was in high school in the 50s. Went to an all girls’s boarding school, where we had occasional social with the all boy’s military school in the nearby town. Graduated from there and went to an all girl’s college, where once again we had socials with the boys from Georgetown – an all male college at the time.

    Personally, I’m still in favor of separated schools in high school – helps the boys keep their minds on their lessons, and gives the girls the opportunity to excel without the fear that if they’re smarter than the boys, they won’t get dates.

    Obviously not a popular theory at the moment…!

    1. Woe is me! I am so behind the times I just realized you had posted this. All of my schools were co-ed. But not all of the classes were! And I think that was a good thing, too!

      Different times. Not better, necessarily. But different.
