The Pond: Then & Now

I thought all y’all might enjoy a walk down to the Puddle– formerly known as the Pond– before it starts raining and the Puddle fills up again.

These two photos were not taken from the same perspective but I think they’ll give you an idea of just how dry it is.

The photo on the left was take March 4, 2015. (See Missy?) Look at the left most margin of the photo where the edge of the water is slightly cropped out (about the vertical half way point). At that horizontal, gaze to the right. See something sticking out of the water? It is the top of the fence stake that’s just barely in the water in the photo on the right, taken this morning.

There’s the stake again, almost dead-center of the picture.

See the sand bar stretching across?

There’re Rocky & Missy standing on the sand bar near what would be the middle of the Pond if it hadn’t had been so dry these last few months.

  1. It looks kind of like there was once a smaller pond, and that the area for the pond was then expanded…

    1. I’m glad you asked. This is the Pond, not to be confused with the Lake which is a real deal and does have a buried– flooded over?– levee which was once the original levee. So the Lake is about twice the size it once was. It’s a low spot on the property and so was probably an embellishment on Nature to begin with.

I don’t think that’s the case with the Pond. It’s ground water and rain. I think it was dug just once and that for however many years things on the sides and in the bottom have shifted. I say this because a few years ago we had a similar dry spell and there was a different arrangement of mud as the Pond dried out. The sandbars have moved.

I think the Pond is just weathering.
