Is dot gov going to get something right?

Mr. Big Food brought me my coffee this morning and returned to the kitchen for some breakfast and his work-morning interaction with Joel. I heard him yelling “No!” at Joel and then he popped his head back in the bedroom door and said, “It’s going to snow tomorrow.”

I made my way to a second cup just as Joel was coming back on so I stood beside Mr. Big Food and sure enough Joel said it was going to snow tomorrow.

  1. My sister’s in northern New York (Burlington). She called over the weekend to see if we were threatened by the fires. She said they have two inches of snow on the ground. She said that the earliest she could remember snow was October 10. I have no idea how she could remember a specific date!

    Guess I’d take snow over fire, but then, the fires only hit us about once in 20 years or so… and even then it’s hit or miss. I thought we might get hit this time, but the wind took the fire south. If it had gone north, we’d have been in real danger…

    1. Glad to hear you’re okay! The more I pay attention to Paradise & surrounds, the worse it gets. Do you read American Digest? (americandigest.org) Give it a look. The writing is beyond compare and the author is / was a resident of Paradise.

      1. We’re closer to the Woolsey fire in Southern Cali. Not _too_ close, fortunately. Even closer to the Hill fire. We sure have had a bunch of them. And rain coming. We’ll get showers, I expect, and Paradise is supposed to get rain, which means mudslides, which means probably many dead people are not going to get discovered and identified. Hard to believe that they’re talking about _hundreds_. Of course, they might be found alive and simply not reporting in, but at this point – some 10 days or so after the fires – and considering that it was a town of many old people, I fear that the conclusion is that many if not most of them are dead, and not reported because they were old and without relatives. We may never know. Sic transit gloria mundi, I guess.
        And yes…I checked your link. I think I bookmarked it…but if not, I know where to find it!

  2. Oops. That would be Utica. She was in Binghamton at one time, and my brain sticks at a “B” town name.

  4. American Digest posted this morning about the rain forecast. I looked at my newest favorite weather forecasting program–“app,” Windy.com– and concluded that there was the potential for a second disaster. I said nothing but other commenters are reaching the same conclusion that you are.

    I remember years and years and years ago as part of our regular jaunt to Budapest, we took a side trip to Bucharest, Romania. To prep, I’d looked into the news, including the weather. Learned a lot. While the cities were slowly moving forward, the rural parts of the country couldn’t gain any traction. Heated with wood, therefore mountainous regions had been cleared, heavy heavy rains, therefore floods and mudslides of Biblical proportion… . Mind you, this was at a time when communism & Ceaușescu were still very fresh in their minds. Move all able-bodied people to the city. Leave behind the old & infirm.

    I know you are a Californian, and I don’t mean to insult, but the parallels are weird. I mean, it’s 2018 in the United States of America. How do the charred remains of the dead go buried under mud?

  5. Actually, I’m not a Californian. I just live here.
    For a long time, it’s true. And you really can’t beat the weather. And no mosquitoes.
    But I’m really not a Californian…!
