Flagrant Notice Suggested for City Traffic Lights
The light was red but he was green,
Or bold, or crazy, maybe mean.
Well, anyhow, on through he sped
To hit a truck. And now he’s dead.
The author of this little oddity was William Wade who apparently earned his bachelor’s degree from William Harvey College in Charleston, West Virginia, and who lived in Beckley. Other than narrowing it down to two possible William Wades who lived in Beckley, that’s all I can find. Another lost soul who wrote not very good poetry. For example…
I smiled at her and then I kissed.
I lost my heart and then was wed.
I later found the heart I missed,
— For my mistake what tears I shed.
There are a lot like that. It does not seem to me that he was a particularly happy fellow. But then again, he lived in Beckley in the ’30s.
