There’s a term for this poppycock, “presentism*”– the tendency to interpret the past in presentist terms– and it’s moronic (no offense to AoSHQ morons). The idea that one needs to go looking in
crappy old children’s books to discover whatever -ism you’re looking for today… . Augh. Forget it. Not worth my time.
*As I understand its use in literature and in history, presentism of this sort is distinct from the philosophical use of the term. According to The Stanford Encyclopedia, presentism is an “ontological thesis”: only present things exist.
