A Blog I Read

Published on March 20, 2019 by Marica

There’s a blog I read religiously, American Digest. A little of this, a little of that. Poetry, music, stories, personal history, thoughts on current and past events, occasional Monty Python. It’s smartly written by Gerard Van der Leun, edited by Olive.

Olive

Gerard’s mom, who is 104 and looks fabulous in red, is not well. If you are the praying sort, please include them in your prayers.

One of my grandmothers reached the end of her life at 104. She was incapacitated for about 10+ years…she had diabetes 2 (in those days called senile diabetes), and as a result, developed gangrene in her foot, and had to have her leg amputated at the knee. She lived with and was cared for by my aunt. Somewhere around 100 she started getting very hard to live with – apparently a common problem with mental deterioration of some sort, and my other aunt, who was a nun with an order that cared for the aged, convinced the aunt with whom she was living that moving her into the home run by the order would be a good option. She lived there until she died, having her other leg amputated at age 102.
She must have been a tough old bird – I wish I had had the chance to know her better!

“Tough old bird.” Haven’t heard that in a long time.

This fellow’s mom is remarkable spry and active– still lives alone even after a fall a couple of months ago. So his readers are all hoping for the best. But 104.

Life can be hard– as you are well aware.

A friend’s father is 94 this year. Still driving.
My son got rear-ended by a car driven by a man who was 98! (not the 98 year old’s fault…he was rear-ended into my son’s truck. Truck had no damage, 98 year old’s car was totaled with front end damage) Remarkable!
I’d be happy to live that long as long as I was capable, but to spend the last 10 years or so in bed?? I’d just as soon not.

5-STAR REVIEW: I fell in love with this pack of dogs and their people ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"I bought the book for my grandson’s 8th birthday. It’s my habit to read books before I gift them and fell in love with this pack of dogs and their people. My grandson was impressed by the dogs' kindness and consideration of other animals...."
