Recipe: Fried Noodle Rings

The Crisco Kitchen is a practical sort of kitchen. Our team of Home Economists are more than scientific. They themselves keep house and understand the problems of preparing home-cooked meals. All of these recipes were tested in the Crisco Kitchen. Practically all were tested at home, as well.

Fried Noodle Rings

Makes 6 servings

  • 2 cups fine dry noodles
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Crisco for deep frying

  1. Place noodles in boiling salted water. Cook until tender. Drain but do not wash the noodles. Place in greased individual ring molds. Chill until firm.

  2. Remove rings from molds. Fry in deep Crisco heated to 365 (or when an inch cube of bread browns in 60 seconds) 2 to 3 minute. (If Crisco is too hot, the cold ring will separate.) Drain on absorbent paper. Place in oven to reheat just before serving.

Serve with Seafood Neptune, Creamed Chicken, or Chow Mein

Crappy Old Cookbook Comments

A square inch of ordinary 2019 sandwich bread is probably going to burn in 60 seconds. It’s 1949. She’s wearing a dress and an apron. No doubt she bakes her own bread.

Absorbent paper. There are no paper towels. But she probably has a roll of the same sort of paper that paper bags used to be made from (100% not from recycled material). Or butcher paper.

Unfortunately, the pages with the recipes for Seafood Neptune, and for Creamed Chicken are missing. It’s a crappy old paperback book. But the authentic 1949 recipe for Chow Mein remains! Coming up shortly.

  1. The cover the cookbook made me laugh. I could imagine changing those tasty donuts for the noodle rings, and that is why the mom is smiling as the child reaches for one, knowing that maybe the son will think twice before he eats all the donuts. Plus she needs amusement and that bold apron isn’t quite cutting it.

    1. Crappy old books are an unending source of amusement! Especially the photos. And I swear to God, they look like they’re really related, don’t you think?

      1. The do! Maybe they were? Maybe she won the good housekeeping seal of approval? But I believe it is staged. I have some old recipe books and they are funny to look at.

      2. I sort of wondered whether she was one of the Home Economists who worked in the Crisco kitchen. ??
