That sums up how impressed Mr. Big Food is with my superior abilities to block the sun from shining into the house in the morning when it’s 85°F at 10am, and in the late afternoon when the heat index is 100°. A cool 76° inside and the A/C has hardly been running.

(It’s been a while since I’ve stepped into a cave but if this joint is a cave, it’s a darned nice one despite all of the crappy old stuff.)

I poked fun the other day of an article at Popular Science titled, “Cool your Home without Air Conditioning,” which wasn’t so much about cooling your home as it was about preventing it from heating up too much in the dead of summer. The ideas were mostly fine but dude got a lot of the science wrong.

Blah blah blah. Yes I am just sitting here cooling off having just come in from doing garden chores.

Up next, laundry. Which reminds me! Miss M and I had an interesting text conversation about ironing the other day.

  1. Ummmm….time to consider compact fluorescents or LEDs???

    You could replace a 100 watt with a 23w CF, or about an 18W LED. I know the light’s different – but so is the heat output. If you decide to consider it, you probably want a WW (warm white) or about 2700 or 3000 Kelvin temperature. Incandescents are usually 2700 Kelvin (also called 27K). 3000K (or 3K) is a bit brighter, but not enough to be objectionable.
    By the way…I like 65K in my kitchen and garage – but 3k in the family room.

    Another by the way…can’t use CFs or LEDs for keeping chicks warm! not enough heat output. So…if you want heat, use incandescents. If you want _less_ heat, use CFs or LEDs. Next thing you know, you’ll change your light bulbs with the season!

    1. It’s dark not so much b/c we purposefully keep the lights off (though we do sometimes) but the joint has no windows in the great room, and just the back patio door that I’ve shut off w/ drapes until about 8:30 or so.

      I have changed out bulbs with the season back in the den where the ceilings are 9′ or whatever. Incandescent does make a big difference in the winter.
