I like technology just as much as the next country mouse but if you turn your life over to something over which you– you— do not have ultimate control, you deserve working up a sweat walking up the steps in your non-air conditioned apartment to physically check on your spawn.
My cable service is Spectrum. Last summer when we had the bad fires in the neighborhood, we lost the cable – I assume a tower went down at least electrically speaking. My house phone is also on the cable system, so obviously, I had no phone. Spectrum is now advertising mobile phone service and offers very good deals when combined with cable service. It’s a good deal…but after the service loss last summer, I don’t want my cable service phone and mobile phone from the same company. Of course, it’s entirely possible that both will use the same towers, but it didn’t work out that way last summer, and I’m hoping that if a similar situation arises in the future, it won’t work out that way then. Of course, you never know- but I want to minimize the likelihood of being totally out of contact.
Things definitely ain’t like the old days!!! It’s hard to imagine … I’ve watched some old cowboy movies and when the tension got bad with the bad guys out there, found myself thinking “Call somebody….call somebody!!!”
Once a month John & I have a discussion about the land line. The land land is buried. It does not rely on a tower. Of course, my mom & in-laws are the only people who also have land lines. But all of the utilities, law enforcement, etc. do. So I’m for keeping it. He thinks it’s a waste of $$. Which it probably is day-to-day, but what if…? And as far as I can tell, the AT&T land line business is distinctly separate from mobil & internet.
I have also been entertaining the thought of a shortwave radio. Would require a LOT of research, though, since I know 0.
Things not being like the old days? They’re not even like last week! 🙂
Land line was $65 per month….cable phone is $17. Easy decision. The phone junk callers use it more than I do!
I’m with you 100% on the shortwave radio…both on “sounds like a good idea” and “it’s going to take a _LOT_ of research”!
I’ve done some ebay shopping – which has helped me to realize how much I don’t know!
My grandson has shown some interest, and for that reason, I’ve collected some websites with various types of info – if you’re interested, I’ll email them to you, but your reply site obviously doesn’t like more than one link at a time!
Absolutely! Email them to me. Would be a tremendous jump start. Thanks!
