What lies in between Big Food, Big Garden, Big Life

Some years ago I studied The Grievances– the middle part of the Declaration of Independence. In the coming days, I will repost my reports of those studies with contemporary commentary.

Also– SueK sent a recipe and I little story which I am also going to post tomorrow if she says it’s okay– stay tuned.

Missy had her checkup. She’s fine. Staples come out Friday.

Today is the first day in almost 19 years that Mr. Big Food will not be going by the title, “Department Head.” The end of an era. More time for research, though, because, you know, he’s been a real slacker when it comes to research these last 19 years. His Curriculum Vitae is only 38 pages long.

You know…times sure change. We were at Wright Patterson AFB for about 8 years. As you probably expect, the community was fairly close knit. Social life was sort of programmed – meaning that women were expected to do a certain amount of entertaining, depending on the position held by their husbands. Some recipes were shared, some were _not_. Reason was that – at least as expressed by my Mom – if a recipe turned out to be particularly well liked, and if you shared it…you could bet you’d find it served by someone else within your circle. So,,, her preference was _not_ to share her recipes, until someone was transferred or until we moved. I’m not sure whether I’d agree with her today or not, but then social life just isn’t the same today as it was then.
I was thinking about it just the other day…my house is a mess. I have _much_ I need to get rid of. Craigslist??? hmmm… check out the “free” list. very interesting. By the way…have you any need for punch bowls? cups? I bet not. And probably don’t need recipes for punch to put in them either. I have a few of those as well. (both bowls and recipes!) Life has changed in the last 40 years. What a surprise!! But who notices..until one day you look around and stuff that was in fairly common use at one time is just cupboard (or attic) space takers.

I would love a punch bowl set! And we have lots of punch recipes. I think it’s too bad folks don’t entertain like they used to. I have two sets of those little rectangular/oval glass plates with cups– the kind that are divided into three sections, the main for appetizers or what have you, another that holds the cups, and a third– get this– with a little divet that was the ash tray. From time to time when we have large crowds I will get them out and use them. The younger people have never seen anything like them.
Course, I also have an orange fondu pot.

And oh yeah…Shrimp Louisiana was one of those she didn’t share…!

Do you have the “Scarlet O’Hara” recipe??? Cranberry juice plus alcohol (don’t remember the recipe off hand).
When my Mom had the ladies over, she had two Punch bowls – one alcoholic, one without alcohol. On one of those occasions, apparently some of the “non-alcoholic” ladies got a bit “boisterous”…. Apparently, it wasn’t clear that the Scarlet O’Hara was alcoholic. Mom put labels on the table after that.
We’re celebrating July 3rd and 4th this year – long story – but I’ll have 3 sons plus a few attachees on the 3rd, then join one son and their family plus attachees on the 4th. No punch…soft drinks only. As I said…times have changed.
You know…I don’t remember having coke in the house either in my childhood family home or my home – except when we had company. And even then, not really served. I remember having coke and bourbon as a mixed drink… Now…I don’t expect to serve anything alcoholic other than beer at family gatherings.
