He comes when he’s called!

“Here Jack!” Or, if you are of a mind, “Here Kyle!”* And more often than not, he comes– especially if you have a carrot in your hand. The other day we drove the truck into the pasture and he came right up.

I did learn that petting him across the barbed wire was foolish and potentially painful. Also, remove fingers before he gets to the end of the carrot.

*More on the naming arrangements some other time. FYI: Kripke’s name came up.

  2. Whatever you call him, since he comes right up to you I suggest you take off his halter. You only need it on when you have to move/lead him somewhere, and it’s possible for the halter to get hooked up to some odd thing like a fence post or something. Probably not given his size and age – he’d probably take the post out first, but I lost a young horse to a broken neck because I’d left a halter on – so I’m a bit sensitive about it.
    Also…when you go to put a halter on, use your left hand to pass the long strap under the animal’s neck while you reach across the top of the neck to take the strap from your hand. Then holding the buckle end in your left hand and the strap with the holes in your right hand, let the nose piece drop to the front of his nose, slip it up to a couple of inches up on his nose, and then buckle the strap. It’s awkward at first, but when you get used to it, its easy. And less likely to cause back stepping than if you stand in front of them and move your hands up on the side of their face till you can get the neck strap buckled.

    On the other hand, I’m constantly reminded of how much I _don’t_ know!!!
