Today is the first in the last 27 days that I am alone at The Farm. That’s right! That Hip Gimp, Mr. Big Food, has resumed almost normal activities and has returned to campus all by himself. And I’m left here contemplating the fact that, no, I am not going do a month’s worth of passed-over drudge work today. I’m takin’ it easy.

We spent last night at my son’s house. Nice to visit family, right? Well…not exactly.
First we had a power outage. Started Wednesday. At 11:45 to be exact. We have a VOIP phone. No power, no phone. No power, no computer. No television. No news. There was a fire in the area, but about 8 – 10 miles away. Didn’t expect the outage.
So…then about 6PM yesterday, son calls and says he can see smoke above the hill that separates our valley from town. This is not good! Yes indeedy…big fire very close. Danger depends on which direction is blowing, but the fire department has made our area as “mandatory evacuation”. Apparently the practice is to expand the evacuation recommended to evacuation mandatory if it’s a maybe-maybe situation as night approaches. They don’t want to have people going to bed/sleep and then try to get them out their houses. Makes sense, even if inconvenient. Now. Remember….I now have no phone and no computer. Well…I have a cell phone, but apparently the “authorities” don’t have that number – just the VOIP number. On that number, phone messages go directly to my email. Oh wait…no computer. So…upshot is that we spent the night at my son’s. Came home this AM and the power was back on. I had two messages in my email telling me we were in the mandatory evacuation zone.
You have no idea how much I appreciate electricity today, and how much I admire those strong people who came west. In fact…I’m so glad I live today and not 100 years ago!
And an “oh yeah”…fire is getting blown west and away from us. No further danger – and the good part is that it reduces fire possibilities for the next 5 or so years.
But it’s scary. A Halloween to remember!
