How Do You Do This? For Months on End?

It’s COLD here. Like in the teens. How do you people suffer this for months and months?

We were running Starkvegas errands the other day. It was mid-January. The temperature was 65-70. What a dilemma!

65-70. Flip flops.

Mid-January. Winter boots.

My unscientific analysis of my observations put it at about 50/50 flip flops to boots.

But this. My God. You can’t walk across the street without seven layers of long johns and a scarf and gloves inside mittens and woolen hat covered up with a hood.

Started the day in Memphis. Get me back to Memphis.

Which is something I never thought I’d say.

  2. I remember two snowstorms in my life…
    First one was in Ohio..at Wright Patterson AFB, in about 1951/52. We had a blizzard. The snow was incredible, and of course, attended by winds. We couldn’t see the street in front of our house…about 30-50 feet from the front door. My Mom was _very_ worried because my Dad wasn’t home – although his office was on base, and probably only about 1 mile from home. But…he wasn’t home. And the streets were filling with snow, and visibility was nil… He did get home eventually, though I don’t remember when…before or after dark. The next morning, the sky cleared, the sun was shining bright…especially bright with all the white snow! And we had drifts…two of them, one in the back yard, and one in the driveway. Both were about 8 ft high! of course, next to them were spots that had practically no snow at all…but those drifts were _very_ impressive!
    The second one was in Washington D.C. in the ’57/’58 winter. I was in school there. In those days there was the trolley system in DC, and the trolley track ran on the street in front of the school. It was a regular sound that we heard 4 or 5 times per hour. Well…that particular morning I woke to silence. It was a strange silence…how can you “hear” silence! But it was so noticeable that I think it woke me. I looked out the window, to discover we’d had about 16 inches of snow during the night. A very quiet snowstorm, but the snow was very deep, and there were no trolleys. And no traffic…no cars…no nothing! D.C. isn’t exactly known for snowfall, and their facilities weren’t particularly well stocked with snow plows. It took them several days to get the streets cleared as I remember, but what I really remember was that silence. It was truly weird. And as a by the way…it was a Catholic boarding college. We lived there, and so did the nuns who taught at the school. So…we didn’t even get time off because of the snow!
