    1. Oh SueK. Everclear is grain ethyl alcohol. 100% alcohol. Relatively cheap and thus the choice of hardcore high school alcoholics. Really livens up cranberry juice!

    Here you go:

    Scarlet O’Hara Punch
    serves 16 to 20

    10 oz Southern Comfort
    2 qts cranberry juice
    3 oz lime juice

    Mix and pour over ice.

    My mom used to serve this at her ladies gatherings. It was customary to have an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic beverage. On one occasion, she served this, and some of the ladies apparently didn’t realize that it was an alcoholic beverage. Much mirth ensued. Mom labeled the punch bowls after that.

    Social life sure has changed, hasn’t it!!

    1. I keep thinking it’s time for a fancy gathering here on the Farm. Like with the punch bowl. And then… .

    No substitution for the Southern Comfort. I don’t know what the difference between S.C and other similar beverages, but apparently there _is_ a difference!!

  4. Well…if you have a need for punch bowls…
    I think I have at least 3 of them in the attic. Unused for at least the last 30+ years. As I said…social life has certainly changed. I think soft drinks in cans has made a lot of the difference…then I started to wonder…when did soft drinks go from bottles to cans?
    I still remember having the Coke machines with bottles, and they had to be refilled on a regular basis. If we timed it right, we’d be in the right place at the right time because the Coke guy had to test his reload before he finished, and if you were right there, he’d give you the test bottle or two. They don’t seem to do that with the cans and modern Coke machines!
    So…I remember having bottled Coke, but I don’t remember when it switched over to cans. Probably because I’ve never been much of a soft drink person…the only times we had them when I was young was when we had parties, or the Coke machine guy during the summer.
    Cans. Hmmm.

    1. Bottles to cans. Don’t know. And as you say, so much I don’t know. There must be a book about *that* right?

      I remember collecting bottles for the return nickel or whatever. Pocket change for kids.

  6. Oh yeah…and then there was “Bug Juice”…before Kool-aid.
    My Mom used to make it – I still have the pitcher she used for it. Always the same one.

    1 can of Welch’s grape juice
    1 can of Lemonade
    Water as required for each can.
    Pour over ice.
    “Bugs” equal the lemon bits that float to the top.

    Of course, you probably know that already.

    Gad! I’m getting old!

  7. I guess they weren’t cans…they were the frozen containers…cardboard or some such.
