I want to comment on something but first I must do some research.

Each page of the Guide to Daily Reading (background) has, naturally, seven entries, corresponding to the number of days in the Gregorian calendar, without the 0.2425th day. (There is no entry for 2/29.)

Aside #1: Do not take the calendar for granted. Did you know that the Gregorian calendar (set forth in 1582) was not adopted in England (and thus, in the colonies) until 1752? This has ramifications. I direct those interested in the calendar and its history– which is one and the same as the history of mankind– to The Romance of the Calendar ( P.W. Wilson. W.W. Norton & Co. Inc. Publishers. Each new page begins with a quotation about books, reading or literature. Today we turn a page and find Oliver Goldsmith:

The first time I read an excellent book, it is to me just as if I had gained a new friend; when I read over a book I have perused before, it resembles a meeting with an old one.

Aside #2: If it’s been a while since you’ve read Goldsmith’s The Deserted Village, consider meeting this old friend again. Quite timely.

Our crappy old book, The Guide to Reading: The Pocket University Volume XXIII, has three copyright dates: 1917, 1922, and 1924. Obviously, we have the 1924 edition. BUT! March 19, 1924 was not a Sunday. Neither was March 19, 1917. This means that the GDR calendar was updated for the 2nd edition, but not the 3rd. Why not?

Which just goes to show you there are a lot of trivially fascinating questions out there if you start looking for them.

Thomas Bailey Aldrich (/ˈɔːldrɪtʃ/; November 11, 1836 – March 19, 1907) was an American writer, poet, critic, and editor. He is notable for his long editorship of The Atlantic Monthly, during which he published writers including Charles W. Chesnutt.^[1] He was also known for his semi-autobiographical book The Story of a Bad Boy, which established the “bad boy’s book” subgenre in nineteenth-century American literature,^[2] and for his poetry, which included “The Unguarded Gates”.^[3]
