I put an asparagus patch in about 2010 or 2011. Didn’t harvest a spear until 2015 I think, and then for the next couple of years only a few. Long story. Remember The Lost Summer? The asparagus patch suffered a real hit that year. Imagine– trying to transplant asparagus in July. In Mississippi.

This season’s shaping up to be a good year for asparagus. Who knew, in 2010 or ’11, that homegrown asparagus was going to come in so handy in 2020? Homegrown asparagus is so much better than store-bought, by the way.

I have some scanning to do to help Mr. Big Food prepare for class. Carry on!

  1. Asparagus are definitely long term projects. Not for your person who rents! In fact, not for people who own, but anticipate transfers in two or three or five years!

    1. That’s true– though how cool would it be to be house hunting and discover one with an established asparagus patch?

  2. My son actually bought a house in SA that has an asparagus patch. It was in pretty sad condition – I don’t know if he’s going to be able to revive it. I’ve tried to give him advice on it, but it seems like there’s always something else that’s more important. I suspect that asparagus just isn’t at the top of his to do list!

    1. Too bad b/c once it’s up and running it requires very little (unless you blanch it).

  3. I’m a bit envious. At the moment we have 25 2-year roots waiting for it to dry out enough for us to dig the bed to plant them. Along with the blueberry bushes and everything else that needs planting. STUPID RAIN!

    1. Sing it, sister! We are starting to dry out a little. But asparagus needs to be dug so deep! Good luck.

  5. How about digging about half the depth needed and then adding a raised garden portion? What I’m thinking is that if you have the problem with rain saturated ground this year, you might have it in future years. Maybe the plants would benefit by not being planted so deep, but having the depth made up by having a raised bed of more friable soil on top that would drain better and earlier – the part that would have the harvestable stalks.
    I don’t know if that’s a workable plan…but maybe? I hate to think of those rootlings just sitting there wasting away!!
