  • General Ulysses Simpson Grant, 16-Pt.II: 3-30

The reading is from The Pocket University, Autobiography Greatest Americans, Volume XVI. Amazingly, I do not have Grant’s autobiography in my collection of crappy old books.

Aside: You know what’s weird? This whole crappy olden days ordering business. I currently have five things on order. May as well have sat down at a desk with a catalog illuminated by an oil lantern, dipped my pen in some ink, filled out a form and mailed it in with a check which included an extra 35 cents for expedited delivery. My God, Man! Fifteen days to get a new 12″ non-stick skillet?

The somewhat incomplete set of the Pocket University Library— that I ordered on April 22nd– should arrive on May 5th. It’s missing Vols. XXIV, XXV, and XXVI, but as these were published after the Guide to Daily Reading, (Vol. XXIII) daily operations will not be negatively affected.

“A Burden He Must Shoulder” from the Journal of Civilization! Heh.

Although it’s not the same volume referenced in the GDR, Archive has a Pocket University volume with Grant’s letters and diary entries.

You may, however, find this more entertaining. Mississippi State University is home to the Grant Presidential Library! Here’s the Digital Collection.

    All kinds of possible reasons, of course, but I’m inclined to think maybe it’s because so much is being ordered and delivered at this time due to the shut downs that the various delivery options are simply overloaded.

    Or a China connection?

    1. Who knows? It’s not like we don’t have skillets here at the Farm, but I thought over two weeks was crazy. Patience is a virtue.

  2. Amazon certainly has its “expect delays due to COVID” warning at the top of their page, but pretty much everything I’ve ordered has come 1-3 days sooner than quoted.

    Of course, I’ve been working on my cast iron for years, and it still isn’t entirely non-stick, especially after some well-meaning helper decides to scrub it out with soap. But if that’s anywhere near the top of my list of worries…

    1. Right. Sodastream arrives tomorrow, so there’s that.

      Our cast iron skillet, if I do say, is a thing of beauty. Took years, though.
