I hate Bermuda grass.

For the past three or four mornings I’ve been cleaning up the front beds. Long term objective is low to no maintenance appealing shrubbery with the never ending volunteer flowers. Meanwhile, as the gardenias, hollies, and Italian cypress have not achieved full size there’s space, so I plant blackeyes and okra in there. They will soon take off like gang busters.

I don’t mind the clover wandering aimlessly around. Free nitrogen. But I hate that G-D Bermuda grass. Every single stupid strand of it has to be pulled out/broken off by hand. The pulling to breaking ratio is about 1:50. It’s like wire. Also known by the name, Devil’s grass.

The plan was to spray it early this spring with Grass-B-Gone before it got going. That was the plan. Maybe it’s not too late. Worth a try.

  1. I like Bermuda grass. But then…climate is the key! Where available water is a limited, Bermuda does well…and is also limited! Other traditional grasses die out…dead …gone.
    There’s another bermuda type but much coarser – that’s a real bugger!! We had it in the back yard when we lived in Simi Valley. Man…that stuff had roots that were about half your baby finger in diameter and went down as far as feet – maybe even deeper, but that was as far as I went! The blades were coarse as well. It did make for a green lawn, but don’t plan on growing anything else!!

  2. Oops….”…as far as…” should be “as far as 6 feet …”.

    I have a problem with my 6 key…I hit it, but it doesn’t always print. In fact, I have several keys with that problem. I suspect I’m going to have to get a new computer one of these days…. Very frustrating to hit keys and then go back and see spaces or no spaces but no printed letters either.

  3. I don’t know. It’s a laptop. I “blew” it out with one of those compressed gas cans, but it doesn’t seem to have made a difference. It seems to affect the numbers plus keys on the right hand side. The LED back lights seems to be ok…but some of the keys just don’t respond as they should. Computer is probably 4 years old – not an expensive model, but it’s been fine up until …. maybe 6 months ago. It’s a Dell … A10? Maybe I just don’t know how to clean it??

      1. I don’t think so. Maybe I can find a tool of some sort…but I’m also a bit afraid to do that. What if they won’t go back on?

      2. Have you tried a hand-vac? My thought would be anything you blow on it may not necessarily blow something OUT. From time to time I tip mine over and give it a gentle wack on the back.

      3. I’ll try a back whack and vacuum and see if that does anything. Doesn’t sound like it will hurt anything! Assuming I’m reasonable about the back whack, of course!

  4. We are plagued by Johnson grass here. same type of jointed roots that break off and if you don’t get them all, the grass grows right back.

  5. I think the one we had was St. Augustine. I don’t think I’d put any saint’s name on that stuff!!

      1. I looked it up…didn’t get much in the way of honest to goodness info. Apparently it’s called “buffalo grass” in South Africa. Then the question arises…did we get it from South Africa, or did South Africa get it from us?? Bet I don’t find an answer to that one! They say it’s good for hot wet climates. We’re certainly hot enough, but not all that wet – unless you apply it yourself. That stuff would grow so deep…and even if there was nothing on top – or didn’t seem to be – if you watered it, “nothing” turned into a mess of green! Those roots just sat underground and waited for the next rainy season! .
