COMPANY! FRIENDS!

Long time readers know Mr. Big Food and I love to entertain out here on the Farm. Six to over one hundred. Paper to antique Fostoria plates. Peasant food to food fit for a king. And everything in between.

<– Evidence that we like to entertain.

I am excited to announce that we have invited a few friends out next weekend! And they have accepted our invitation.

Just think of it! People. Conversation. Beef Brisket in Beer. Vegetarian Sloppy Joes. Both in the slow cooker. Homemade ice cream.

I’ll make a big glass carafe of homemade fizzi water and muddle a bunch of fresh mint in it. We should have a specialty drink, too. Something that smacks of lazy summer.

Think of it! Carrots and Jack and the Dummies. Maybe some fishing, a walk through the Piney Woods, some may want to try their hand at mauling the fallen oak. And I bet our guests will have as much fun as we!

The lead up will be wonderful. A trip to the Asian Market in Starkvegas for red lentils. Freshly ironed table clothes and flowers and what to use as service? We’ll serve supper on the bar in the Bunkhouse, as usual, but maybe some outposts for apps & such? Folks will bring sides, salads, and desserts. (These people know how to cook!) Tiki torches and Christmas lights. Contingency plans for rain. I may even polish the floors.

Gosh. We’ve know one of these guys for 20 years– since the earliest days in Cincinnati. They are all at least that much younger than we are. Both the youngest and the oldest were students of John’s. The youngest– who has already committed to a Middle Eastern salad of mint and cucumbers from her mom’s garden– will be a real challenge. She is a hugger! So is Mike.

Who knows where the conversations will go? There’s just so much. And we’re friends.

I think I will do the floors. They look as good when they’re shiny.

    1. Thank you! I am positively giddy at the prospect of cleaning six bathrooms so that each guest/couple/family can have his own! It’s a shame you and yours are not closer by. Would do you good to get out in the country for a spell.

      1. If I were anywhere near you, we’d be there in half a heartbeat.

        As for getting out in the country – we’re buying land in the next several months. Looking for probably 4+ acres in an area about 90 minutes east of us.I’ll have to start researching just how not to screw that up. Buying land’s entirely new to me/us.

      2. TIP #1 (unless you’re paying cash): Finance through a farm credit type place, not a conventional bank. They are similar to old fashioned credit unions. At closing, you’ll pay a fee to become a member. BUT you get dividends. Some years our dividend check is almost as much as a mortgage payment. Always more than 1/2 of one. In another couple of years when the farm is paid off, we’ll still get dividends. AND they do not sell notes. Everything stays in house and at least regionally local. In our case, we’ve worked with the same one guy since day one– even though he has moved up several rungs on the ladder. Another nice thing is that if you build/remodel or need equipment you just go back to the same guy.
