Toynbee Update

We are talking about a 10 volume set of A Study of History (1954). Shipped 2/28. Made it to Memphis from Washington state 3/8. Departed 3/12 and hasn’t been heard from since. Book seller filed a claim with USPS more than a week ago. Nothing (but keep reading).

Yesterday I went into our local post office. The nice lady’s eyes popped out of her head when I told here how much the books costs. She got on it. Interestingly, the claim was closed yesterday but no explanation was given.

Unfortunately, the postmaster himself was off yesterday. She took all the relevant info and he will know who to call or where else to look to see if he can track it down.

This is my last best hope. I emailed a real book seller in Birmingham and he replied that he’d be happy to find me another set for the low low price of $1500. That is not going to happen. The University Library has a set. Spoke to a friend and librarian who used to work there and she said it was worth a shot but she’d never heard of a university library selling books except at a regular sell-off.

So. Cross your fingers that the local postmaster has good luck.

And yes, there are still sets out there but I’d be going through the same thing again. Which I will do if necessary but I’d rather not.
