From one point of view, starting the school is almost incidental to the story. Not to me, of course, because love of learning is so much a part of the world (real and imagined) of Farther Along Farm, and I wanted kids–and their grownups–to see the characters come to “realize they needed a school for all the animals on the farm who want to learn and teach….” But Missy and her pack–including Tiger the Cat–could have decided to write a book together, compose a symphony, plan and plant and harvest a garden.
The short way to say this is that the book is about the characters–their everyday lives and how they care for one another.
I don’t believe that in any of the family reading gifts included a Missy and John kitchen morning.
This is the first of several early mornings we spend with Missy and John in the kitchen. They have their routine. They chat over cups and bowls of coffee. It’s their time.
