The Suomi-Finland Puukko

A ‘puukko’ is a Finnish sheath knife. This, the Marttiini Suomi-Finland puukko, is a real beauty and it is on my dining room table.

The roots of the Suomi-Finland knife go back more than 20 years. When Finland celebrated 80 years of independence in 1997 Marttiini naturally celebrated the event by making a knife. In 2009 the design of the knife was updated. At the end of the handle is the Finnish Lion cast in bronze, and the knife carries with it the strong spirit of Finnish stamina with which our forefathers secured the independence of our nation. The Lion is also printed on the sheath.

This knife has been presented to our athletes at several Olympic Games. It is known as the “Stamina Knife” (Sisupuukko in Finnish) and is a token of respect for exhibiting extreme stamina and perseverance.

The blade is 4.3″ (11cm); the handle is curly birch, waxed, with bronze ferrules. The sheath is leather, naturally.

Marttiini’s story begins as many you’ve heard:

It all began in 1928 at the land of dark Arctic winters and the midnight sun, when a blacksmith Janne Marttiini decided to establish knife factory to Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland.

With the user in mind, he began to create beautiful, high quality utility articles to be used in the harshest conditions imaginable.

But don’t let its beauty fool you. The moment you put one to a test, you’re convinced it is the perfect tool for your need. You feel the sensation of natural materials like leather, curly birch, reindeer antler, and of course the ultra sharp blade always made from finest steel.

And it ends as many stories do:

In the fall of 2005, the international fishing gear tackle corporation giant Rapala VMC LtdCorp. bought Marttiini Ltd.’s whole capital stock from Marttiini family. The trade aquisition strengthened Rapala’s position as number one in fishing equipment tackle worldwide, and hastened expedited the journey of Marttiini’s products to the world. 

Ah well.
