What is the function of the table?

In the long run we have to admit that the table must offer something more than just food. Gathering for the process of eating also involves nurturing and communication, as well as sustenance. Therefore I a convinced that “being at table” means that you are most often with and concerned about someone else.

When I was a college chaplain years ago I worked with students who were so hungry to come to table that they did so even when little food was offered. Companionship and insight were often the meal. That is serious feasting!

This book is certainly less complicated than anything else we have done, and it is somewhat more basic because I want everyone to feel both comfort and comfortable in the kitchen and thus at table. Children should certainly be taught to cook so that they do not grow up having to depend upon someone else for their food. The ability to cook also gives one a sense of self-confidence and independence, two gifts that can be returned to friends and family when they gather for a feast.

I have nothing against prepared foods or fast foods, except that they are often boring. Cook fresh foods several times a week, even if you live by yourself. You will feel better in terms of your health and the friends with whom you share your food will continue to feed your friendship.
