Big event yesterday!

For the last couple of years our Village has put on a Trade Day (a fall festival). Mind–this is not Town (population ~2000), this is Village (pop. ~100). Strange as it sounds, Village is the county seat.

Long, long time readers will recall that in 2013 the County Courthouse burnt almost to the ground. This post has a few links. It was a beautiful, classically designed building–over 100 years old at the time of it’s demise. For several years there was much discussion, and finally a vote, on what should be done. Eventually, we got a new courthouse on a different parcel of land.

The old site, however, was not forgotten. They salvaged the steps, and much of the foundation, and then turned what had been the interior space into a small park. You’ll be able to visualize as you scroll through the photos.

We went down around 11am to wander around and have lunch. I think there were three food trucks, though the one we chose wasn’t a truck at all–just a guy grilling chicken. And man was it delicious! $5 for a chicken sandwich, that’s a leg quarter on top of two slices of white bread; $12 for a chicken plate which included a piece of cake. More than enough food.

The vendors had some very nice stuff, and there was an abundance of folk selling preserves, local honey and what not. The photo of the trailer with the boxes is of the Vardamen sweet potato seller. Bushel box weighing 40# was just $25. We are set for sweet potatoes this fall and winter. I think the variety is Beauregard, the red ones which are my favorites.

We went past the site this morning. Not a scrap of litter to be seen and all of trash dumpsters were lined up pretty as you please waiting for trash day.
