This isn’t from all that long ago–September, 2020–but it’s interesting and worth a repost. Tad on the longish side so if you aren’t flush with time, skim through the biography and prairie voles and get to the list of Getz’s major accomplishments. Interesting guy. Someone needs to write his biography. I do not have words

Our annual conference is coming up. As every year, Mr. Big Food choses a song lyric to go with, and I design the poster and program cover based on the brain illustration Daughter C did, and add the lyric. I always wear Miss M’s tie dye to the 3-day conference. This year I asked her

Commentary below Powerline’s The Week in Pictures Philosophers get picked on a lot by folk who don’t understand what good philosophy is. Yes. I went there with the triple emphasis because there are a lot of philosophers who don’t do good philosophy. In fact, there are some daffy philosophers. See? This is a recent photo

Today calls for another cool down. From February 2021. Hard to believe we’re coming up on the 25th anniversary of the construction of The Synaptic Jct., isn’t it? The Synaptic Jct. was the outdoor kitchen Mr. Big Food’s graduate students built for him at our home in Cincinnati. Took the sign when we moved to

Looks like I put together a short series of Sunday Travels posts a few year ago. The video shows more of the passage which we’d probably call a pedestrian alley. It’s from 2007, can you believe it? The “tree” I refer to below is the pine tree within the circle emblem. It’s the sign for

I am slowly catching up. I gave them each a new bunny and told them a story about how the bunnies were looking for them. So I turned the story into a little booklet. They took such a shine to Tiger that they are getting Certificates of Kindness. Along with a letter congratulating them. Will

Miss M, grandson, daughter’s friend, and her son are coming for a visit. I’ve been informed that friend is a go-er and a do-er. This information spun my head initially. I don’t mind going and doing but I’m not certain we’d all like to go and do the same things. Plus, they will have driven

I wasn’t really surprised to see the post below pop up on today’s read posts. I searched, and I have mentioned him twice here at Big Food. The other post got hit yesterday. Gerard is an amazing human being. He’s being called the Poet Laureate of the Internet. And rightly so. Context for the copied

As Missy is wont to do, I’ve began last Sunday’s Travels in the middle of things. So let’s back up. First– thanks to Daughter C! Not only were the photos taken by her when she & the J-Man visited the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, but also she kindly supplied me with a lot of

One last post to wrap up our travels up north a few weeks ago. This one is all about Mr. Big Food in his world. As I mentioned, he’d been invited to give the annual lecture at the Center for Philosophy of Science. First day he met with the fellows and they discussed some of

Oregon Muse, the fellow who did the Ace of Spades Headquarters Sunday Morning Book Thread (from which I liberally swiped content) has passed away. I corresponded with him several times over the years. He was knowledgeable and generous with his knowledge. Prayers for his family and friends.
comes courtesy of Gerard Van der Leun. And so we did what any two young boys would do. We improved our fort and hauled in supplies. With some pruning sheers that my mother convinced herself she must have mislaid, we carefully trimmed out the inside stands of bamboo until a comfortable space was made (invisible

Throughout the day they worked. They played. They entertained the dogs. They watched football. They read. They wandered around the Farm. Quite sure they managed to get a nap in there somewhere. Sometimes I’d see two or three of them sitting around the kitchen table or out on the patio chatting and laughing. I won

Remember when People used to come out to the Farm and have supper, sit around the picnic table, spend the night? Remember when Mr. Big Food would get up early, make coffee and whoop up a great Farm breakfast? Remember when People would hang out and go for hikes into the Piney Woods or the

One of my assignments this week is helping the Italian Post-Doc navigate The Automobile Insurance racket so she can get insurance so she can buy/lease a car. She’s looked into it online and it is, let us say, cost-prohibitive. Mr. Big Food and I: Let’s see what Sue at our local insurance office can come

I do not have words to tell you how blown away I am. So I’ll just tell you what happened. We’ll start with Prairie Voles (Microtus ochrogaster). Prairie Voles are one of only 4% of mammalian species which have a monogamous social structure. Males and females pair-bond for life. When one passes, the other frequently

This was once one of my favorite places on earth. A passage between Semmelweis Ut. and Károly Krt. in Budapest. Oh look! The art gallery is still there! I bought things for Mom in that gallery. And the chocolate shop, too! Though sorry to see the little tree– there’s a Spar there now. Sad. We

Nedah changed her perspective on the room by moving the lectern to the corner. A move I approve! This meeting of The Farm Circle was down a couple of folks. What Neil is doing hanging around Farmville, North Carolina has been explained but still remains… strange. Almost all of the food at social hour was
