Whew. Small people are a bottomless pit of energy and an absolute delight. Biggest hit so far at The Farm for six year old Grandson and his 7 year old Friend? Tiger the Cat. Tiger really is a laid back lover of a cat, and he just relished the attention. He crashed by supper time.

It’s Off Topic Wednesday at The Old Books Blog. Lots of lovely art. Please go take a look. Thanks!
The world’s first solar panels Published on August 31, 2020 by Marica | Edit I spent a delightful 50+ minutes this afternoon chatting about plant physiology– and popular misconceptions about such– with Kat. At issue is the idea that less than perfect leaves should be wacked off the plant so as to allow the plant to channel its good intensions

Stark Summer: A Novel of Correlated Incidents (James Robert Peery, 1938) Over the next couple of days I’m going to post enough content to make up for lack of same so far this summer. Hope you enjoy and I’d appreciate feedback. Also, I need $200 to buy Peery’s second book, God Rides a Gale, so

Today we will be looking at Christmasy things. Hope you enjoy!
As I’m sure you are all wondering what’s become of Miss Missy’s School, here’s an update. Last week, Daughter C got me the– are you ready for this?– watercolor paintings (!) that are the full color illustrations for the book. I took them to the professional copy place in town and had them scanned as

This is the map of Farther Along Farm that I drew for Miss Missy’s School: A Pack of Farm Dogs Starts a School. Daughter C has sent me the watercolor painting which are the illustrations. (Wow!) And so I asked Kat if she’d mind doing some things in Photoshop to bring the map up to

I was thoroughly unhappy with my original idea for a gift from Tiger the Cat to Little Tommy. So I’m racking my brains and doing DDG searches, and this is the help I get. It goes without saying that neither Tiger nor Tommy smoke weed. But I laughed. Never ceases to amaze me what they

Which of The Daughters created this masterpiece? I’ll let you know as soon as they tell me!
May your days, too, be filled with such joy!
Here on the Farm, there’s always a crappy old book to help illuminate the dark recesses of my brain which used to not only know, but teach this stuff. Kat & I talked about this yesterday.
I sent that picture of the very odd kitchen from the previous post to Daughter C– the artist who makes her living as a professional kitchen and bath designer– and she replied, “oh god no.” Beautiful, isn’t it? Daughter C did that! She designed a bar around an old brick column/chimney associated with a stove.
I was looking for something yesterday– and as it turns out it was right under my nose (would that The Essential Thomas Paine be found there, too)– and not only did I find something for which I wasn’t looking (looking for, whatever), I found this as well. Context: A couple of years ago I took

Now we are using fresh oregano, but come this fall we’ll switch to dried. If I had to guess, I’d say that’s a 2-quart container. And that will be about half of what I’ll end up with. So a gallon of dried oregano. Mr. Big Food uses a lot of dried oregano. And OMG! The

Three weeks or so ago, when the MS NWS (Mississippi branch of the National Weather Service) alerted me to prepare for tornado season, I checked my preps. This is something I do twice a year. Being prepared for tornadoes, hurricanes, power outages, and zombies makes preparing to spend significant amounts of time isolated here on

Good morning! Hope this finds you well.
Happy Day After Mother’s Day! A comment from SueK yesterday reminded me of something. We wished each other Happy Mother’s Day and she said, “Telephone time!” Kids were calling. Back in the crappy olden days when everyone had a landline, Mother’s Day was the busiest day of the year for calls. Sometimes when you tried

Hobbiton, New Zealand! From Kat & Tony’s Newsletter: To get to Hobbiton, you drive into farm country. Actually, most of New Zealand is farm country, but in this case you drive into places where it’s tough to get a cell signal. We arrived late the night before — late enough that we weren’t sure whether

Everywhere I go today there is doom & gloom. Lileks gives us a harangue about Jimmy Kimmel and civility. VanderLeun gives us a wonderful story about the Mountain of the Holy Cross only to tell us the cross is gone and so is shame. And now The Professor links to this: “What we’re witnessing is the

From Kat: Hi Mom! I don’t think this matters a ton but, the “fictional rodent” description isn’t quite accurate. Muad’Dib is a human character sort of like a Jedi or a magical Bedouin from the sci-fi book “Dune” and movie of the same name. The character’s original name is Paul Atreides, and he takes on
